Visit Orkney's only working water mill, home of beremeal since 1873.

The Barony Mill is open to the public for guided tours during the summer months.

You can learn more about the history of bere and the traditional methods used to mill beremeal flour. You will also be shown all the stages of the milling process, from drying the grain over a kiln, through the various pieces of machinery, all driven purely using water power.

View photographs of old-time farming in Birsay and milling tools, and see samples of the bere barley grain at each stage of the milling.

Tours also include demonstrations of the running of the machinery and will take place every day of the season at 11.00am, 11.45am, 12.30pm, 1.15pm, 2pm, 2.45pm, 3.30pm and 4.15pm.

Advance bookings are welcome, however space is often available so do pop in if you are passing. Barony Mill tours last about 30 minutes and are suitable for all ages, but please be advised there are some stairs to reach the upper floors. Mill tours cost £5.00 per person and children under 12 are free of charge.

There is also a shop onsite where you can buy beremeal flour and products made with beremeal, as well as other souvenirs.

Book your space by phoning 01856 721 439, or at the Mill shop.
