The dig dates for the final excavation season at the Ness of Brodgar have been announced.
2024 will see archaeologists working at the site for the final time. The dig will be open to visitors on weekdays between Wednesday, June 26, and Friday, August 16.
Daily free tours will be on offer once again, giving members of the public the perfect opportunity to learn more about the Ness and its significance.
This year will mark 21 years since the discovery of this sprawling Neolithic complex, found in the centre of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage Site, next-door to the Ring of the Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness.
Fieldwork at the Ness will end after the 2024 season, with the focus moving onto scientific analysis of all the recovered material, including pottery, stone tools, bones and much more, that has been discovered on the site.
The dig will be covered and returned to a green field after next year (the stone used in the ancient buildings here degrades quickly if left exposed to the Orkney elements), so 2024 is the final chance to see the Ness of Brodgar in all its glory, with archaeologists on-site.
